Days of Glory – Indigenes

In common with many world powers, France held colonies in Africa, with it controlling Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia amongst others.
Rachid Bouchareb´s moving film explores the involvement of Algerian and other North African troops fighting for France during the second world war.
From their recruitment through their fighting in a variety of campaigns in Italy and France the film follows a group of soldiers as they confront not only German troops but also treatment at the hands of their own officers.
As war films go it´s probably one of the most interesting ones that I’ve seen in a long time, as it explores an area that had been untouched by filmmakers previously.
It would be interesting to see something similar with say the Irish involvement in WW2.
Great film anyway and highly recommended.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Comments Off 14 July 2007

The Harry Potter franchise is red hot.
This summer sees the release not only of the last book in the series, but also the latest of the films – Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
I went to see the film last night with a few friends.
First off I have to say it was fantastic.
If you are one of those people who complains about how films diverge from the books on which they are based, then you will probably have some ammunition to use against it. However you need to be pragmatic. If Warner had used the book in its entirety the film would probably have run to about 4 hours.
Having said that there were a number of elements in the film that didn’t make too much sense, unless of course you kept a close eye on the newspapers (The Daily Prophet) that appeared from time to time.
As one of my friends commented, the films have been getting darker and darker.
The first film in the series was light and magical. Now it’s bordering on almost nightmarish sequences.
It’s only a week until the next book, which is the final one in the Harry Potter series, is released.
