Nikita Gets Yet Another Reboot

Comments Off 19 September 2010

nikita-maggieq-2010.jpgLuc Besson probably couldn’t have guessed what he’d done when he unleashed Nikita on the world 20 years ago. The film, which starred Anne Parillaud, who Besson was involved with at the time, is incredibly dark, but also incredibly stylish.  The film was a huge success and was then remade in the US as The Assassin, starring Bridget Fonda.

On the small screen Nikita gave birth to La Femme Nikita, which was a Canadian show that ran for 5 seasons.

Fast forward to 2010 and we see the franchise has been given a completely fresh look and feel with the debut of Nikita.

This time round Nikita has “gone rogue” and is trying to take down the secretive agency which trained her to be a killer. Nikita is played by Maggie Q, who you might remember from Live Free or Die Hard.

So far two episodes have aired on US networks, while the series will be picked up by Living in the UK for an October airing.

So what’s it like?

It’s a hell of a lot darker than the previous TV incarnation of Nikita and is a lot closer to the original Luc Besson film. Maggie Q holds her own as a beautiful but deadly assassin, while the other members of the cast all seem to fit in quite nicely. An obvious parallel to draw would be to Joss Whedon’s DollHouse, but hopefully it will last longer (Dollhouse only had two series before being cancelled by the network)

Resident Evil Afterlife – Quick Review

1 Comment 10 September 2010

Resident Evil Afterlife, which is the 4th instalment in the film franchise based on the video game of the same name, went on release in Ireland and the UK today.
In most cinemas it’s showing in 3D, so I went to see it this evening.

As a sidenote, while I do enjoy the visual effects that these 3D films are bringing to the big screen, I’m not overly happy with the glasses cinemas are giving patrons. Since I wear glasses I end up with the 3D glasses perched on top of my existing ones, which definitely is not comfortable. As soon as I can find prescription 3D glasses I will be getting some.
But I digress.

Resident Evil Afterlife is good fun overall, though it does drag in parts. The plot picks up from where the 3rd film left us, so the first few minutes of the film involve multiple Alices (Milla).
In terms of visual and special effects you will be pleased and the director made good use of the 3D. I found myself practically ducking at times.

Unfortunately the plot is more than a little weak, so if you’re expecting to get any depth from a film then is not the film for you.

So in summary.
Lots of action. Great visuals. Milla in 3D looks great. Wonderful soundtrack as usual.
If you want to escape for a couple of hours then it’s perfect
