Irish Home Entertainment Chain Xtravision In Trouble

The Irish home entertainment giant Xtravision appears to be having difficulties.

An interim examiner has been appointed to the chain, which has 1300 employees and over 180 outlets across the 32 counties of Ireland.

According to The Examiner, the company is suffering from cashflow issues due to the withdrawal of trade credit facilities combined with falling revenues.

Xtra-vision has been very vocal in recent months about copyright theft and has been pressing the Irish government to enact legislation to deal with illegal downloads of copyright content ie. films

However, in some respects these kind of problems are not that surprising.

In the US the mega-chain Blockbuster, which also had interests in several European markets, got into difficulties and was sold off.

So while video may have killed the radio star, has iTunes and the other streaming services, combined with Amazon, killed off the “traditional” home entertainment market?

MacGruber – Or How To Waste 90 Minutes of Your Life

Comments Off 28 April 2011

There are dire films, there are “B movies” and then there’s MacGruber.

I’ve seen comedies that are tacky or where the jokes and gags were a bit forced. But compared to MacGruber they were works of art.

If you have any respect for your time and sanity don’t bother with this film.

The script is terrible. The cast take “wooden” acting to a whole new level, but with such a terrible script that’s probably understandable.

It’s meant to be a comedy parody of McGyver, but it’s simply not. Not funny. Not clever. Not worth watching.

Avoid

Lord Of The Rings Extended Edition Coming To Bluray

Comments Off 25 April 2011

The long overdue release of Lord of the Rings (extended edition) on Bluray is scheduled for June. Filming of The Hobbit only started recently, so we’ll have to wait about two years before getting a fresh dose of Tolkien …

I’ve already got the standard definition DVD, but the higher definition bluray version is very very tempting!

You can pre-order it now: The Lord of the Rings Trilogy – The Extended Edition

New Look New Home and IPv6

Comments Off 25 April 2011

I won’t bore people with the details, but for a number of reasons I’ve moved this site over to WordPress.

Apart from anything else it’s easier to either get a semi-decent template and / or bribe someone to tweak one for me

The site is also available over IPv6 (or will be once the new DNS record kicks in :) )

There are probably broken links, broken images and other issues, but I will try to fix them as soon as I am aware of them

If you spot anything and want to ping me an email: michele @ mneylon.com will get me

Just Go With It

Comments Off 14 April 2011

just-go-with-it.jpgAdam Sandler’s comedies can be either incredibly funny or quite painful to watch. When the cast and the script work well, however the results are practically comic genius.
In the case of Just Go With It I found myself laughing out loud. Between Sandler and the other cast’s antics and a quite clever script (in parts) you will be entertained.

Sandler plays a plastic surgeon who has been his “marriage” to seduce women for 20 years. When he finally meets a woman that he could actually have a real relationship with (Brooklyn Decker) he gets caught up in his own web of lies. Next thing he knows he’s managed to gain a wife (Jennifer Aniston) as well as two kids.

It’s laugh out loud funny in parts, though predictable.
