The Hurt Locker was not a big budget movie - at least not on the scale of Avatar, yet it swept the boards at last night's Oscars.

Irish hopes were not completely dashed, as Irish man Richard Baneham was awarded for Visual Effects work on Avatar.

This year's Oscars ceremony is only is only a few weeks away (March 7th 2010) and the final nominees are due to be announced on February 2nd.

The race for Visual Effects is now down to the last 7 films, which are:

Of the 7 only 3 will make it onto the final list!

So which ones are going to make it?

Avatar - Character
James Cameron's Avatar was only released a couple of weeks ago, but it's already broken several box office records.

According to the latest reports the film is already the 4th highest grossing film in history. Oddly enough another James Cameron flick, Titanic, still holds the number 1 spot.

Figures from Box Office Mojo currently report that Avatar has brought in over $1 billion so far worldwide. If those figures are box office receipts ONLY, then the total grossed to date could be significantly higher.
The soundtrack to Avatar is currently ranking at no. 18 in the Amazon US music bestseller list. It may not be faring as well on Amazon UK, but it's doing pretty well on iTunes, where it currently ranks at 42 on the bestseller list.
And there's also the console game, the various tie-in books, posters, tshirts etc etc etc, without even mentioning the millions that they'll pull in when the film gets released on DVD and BluRay in April.

It will be interesting to see how this pans out.

Avatar - Character

Avatar - it's either going to be the best film anyone has seen in years, or it's going to be an absolute disaster.

The amount of media coverage and hyper surrounding James Cameron's latest film is, for lack of a better word, insane.

If you're not sure what it's all about then you can check out the official trailer

If you've got a reasonably well specced desktop machine, then try the interactive trailer, which uses Adobe Air.

The interactive desktop application brings you the trailer as well as plenty of extra content, including easy access to interviews with the cast and a whole lot more. (I suspect the BluRay release is going to have a veritable bonanza of extras.. )

The film gets its official release on December 18th, but I suspect a lot of cinemas will be showing "premieres" before then ..
