This year's Oscars ceremony is only is only a few weeks away (March 7th 2010) and the final nominees are due to be announced on February 2nd.

The race for Visual Effects is now down to the last 7 films, which are:

Of the 7 only 3 will make it onto the final list!

So which ones are going to make it?

Although I haven't had a chance to write up a review of Terminator Salvation yet I thought I might share some featurettes of the cast and crew.

Christian Bale and McG talk about the film:

And a more general one with other members of the cast:

The latest trailer for Terminator Salvation is now available and it looks fantastic (HD version looks a lot better than standard!)

The robots look amazing and the special effects are stunning. Now whether the storyline is any good or not remains to be seen, but Christian Bale is always interesting to watch on the big screen.

There's also a 4 minute version (HD again is worth watching)

It's interesting to see the different marketing techniques that the film studios are using to push their latest films.

In the case of Terminator Salvation the studio's marketing department have come up with some really interesting ways of leveraging social media with presences on both Twitter and Facebook.

While the Facebook stuff is one thing, the Twitter presence is something quite new.

I love film posters. While some of them aren't that creative and simply have a shot of the main characters, others are incredibly evocative images which can stand by themselves as artworks.

The upcoming release of Terminator Salvation, starring Christian Bale, has several posters available, so I thought it would be interesting to share the ones I've got my hands on with others.

I seem to have a fixation with the Terminator franchise. Now while I could apologies for being so fascinated by it I won't, because I simply love it!

Anyway, here's the full official UK trailer (the HD version is really sweet!):

>

The official UK release date is now slated as June 3rd 2009 (brought forward from the original date of June 5th).

Linda Hamilton ("Sarah Connor," left) and Edward Furlong ("John Connor," right) star in Lionsgate Home Entertainment's Terminator 2 Skynet Edition Blu-rayWhen I spotted the upcoming release of Terminator 2 (Skynet Edition) on Amazon I was immediately taken by it, but I didn't get a chance to explore it in more detail.

I have since!

The release comes in more than one flavour. There's the "standard" bluray, which has the following extras and features:

  • Multiple THX-certified versions high-definition versions of the film
  • All-new English 6.1 DTS-HD Master Audio Lossless
  • Picture-in-picture of behind the scenes video, text commentaries and multimedia galleries
  • Storyboard-script mode - view storyboards and read the script while watching the film
  • Interactive quizzes and games
  • BD-Live™ enabled, featuring games, extra content and more for internet-connected players
  • Audio commentary with 26 cast and crew members
  • Audio commentary with director James Cameron and co-writer William Wisher
  • Enhanced for D-Box™ Motion Control Systems
  • Includes THX Optimizer
Blu-ray Audio Status:  English 6.1 DTS-HD Master Audio Lossless, English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround EX, French Dolby 2.0 Surround, English TheaterVision descriptive narrative audio for the blind and vision-impaired

But what's really looking cool, although not exactly cheap, is the super-duper collector's release - the limited Edition T2 Complete Collector's Set, a 6-disc set, packaged with a 14" T-800 Endoskull bust that plays sound effects from the film while its eyes light up, this collectible set features the Terminator 2 Skynet Edition Blu-ray plus both the Extreme Edition DVD and Ultimate Edition DVD - which, combined, include every T2 special feature ever released on DVD.  As a bonus, the Limited Edition T2 Complete Collector's Set comes with a digital copy of the film for iTunes or Windows Media.

It looks amazing! Now can I justify the expense?
While the normal bluray release has an RRP of $29.99, the super duper edition is at $174.99!!!

Is summer 2009 going to be another summer dominated by sequels?

Or are we going to see some new and interesting films that really captivate the imagination?

On the sequel front there are several titles due for release that will be anxiously awaited by a lot of people.

X-Men Origins (Wolverine) - A "working" print of this was leaked online a couple of weeks ago, but I suspect it will still do well at the box office. The X Men franchise always seems to do quite well regardless of how good the films themselves actually are. In this outing we get to find out how Wolverine came into being.

Star Trek - Yet another "franchise reboot". With the trailers and other stuff I've seen so far this looks like it will be worth watching. Abrams has a way of doing films that just works I guess!

Angels and Demons - I think I'll pass.

Night at the Museum 2 - The first one was great fun. Here's hoping that the sequel is just as enjoyable

Terminator Salvation - well we all know about this one. If for no other reason than the onset outbursts of the lead actor. In any case I've always liked the Terminator franchise, so with the latest technology available for the effects this should be visually interesting at least.

Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen - I loved the first one, so I hope this one is as good. Expect lots and lots of hype

Ice Age - Dawn of the Dinos - the previous Ice Age films have been very popular, though I still haven't actually seen one from beginning to end.

Already released sequels ....

Fast and Furious - I'm still not 100% sure about this one. They brought back most of the original cast, which was probably a good thing in some ways, but it isn't exactly "amazing cinema". Some great action sequences though.

Crank - High Voltage - Looks like wonderfully violent escapism.

Have I missed any important one?

Are any of these films going to be worse than I can imagine?

Christian Bale's onset outburst seems to be attracting a lot of media attention.

You can listen to the audio here, but this remix of it is a lot more amusing (NB: strong language)

The official trailer for Terminator 4 (Salvation) was made available a few weeks ago.

It looks like it could be a nice sequel and reboot for the Terminator franchise:

According to a post on the official Terminator Salvation blog, they've concluded shooting the principal photography.

By the sounds of things the production team are very aware of what they will have to live up to if they hope to follow in the footsteps of the previous Terminator films.

So what kind of new and amazing visual effects will they bring to this new incarnation of Terminator?

So far they've been quite tightlipped, so I guess we'll have to wait to find out.

In the meantime you can always follow the Sarah Connor Chronicles TV show which is in its second season ...

The first iteration of Terminator Salvation's posters was posted on their official blog.

At least it's in keeping with the traditional Terminator iconography (click to enlarge)

Terminator Teaser

When I mentioned the Terminator teaser the other day I hadn't found a version of it that was "safe" to share, as a lot of the videos on YouTube get pulled if they're not officially endorsed by the studios.

So here's one that is unlikely to get pulled:

While Terminator Salvation (the fourth Terminator film) won't be hitting our screens until 2009, Warner has released a teaser trailer to whet fans' appetites.

This time round we won't have Arnie, as he's probably a bit too busy with his political career, but we will have Christian Bale taking up the mantle.

You can download the trailer in a variety of formats from the official blog
