Sherlock Gets US Makeover With CBS Elementary

Arthur Conan Doyle's creation, Sherlock Holmes, has been brought to the big screen and the smaller one many times over the last 100 years. The BBC's “Sherlock”, for example, was well received, even if it did put Sherlock and Watson in a contemporary London setting.

However CBS' take on the Sherlock Holmes mythology might be a bigger departure from those that have appeared to date.

Not only is Sherlock Holmes transposed to modern day New York, but his sidekick, Watson, is played by a woman – Lucy Liu.

“Elementary will premiere this autumn and stars Jonny Lee Miller (Trainspotting) as Sherlock Holmes, alongside Lucy Liu (Charlie’s Angels) as Dr Joan Watson on a modern-day take on the iconic detective series.
Sherlock Holmes is taking on New York where, straight out of rehab, he’s been assigned to live with his worst nightmare sober coach, Dr Joan Watson. Holmes’ unsurpassed skills of deduction and Watson’s medical expertise come together to create a dream team for solving the NYPD’s most impossible cases.
Elementary also stars Aidan Quinn (Legends of the Fall) as Captain Tobias “Toby” Gregson, who knows of Sherlock’s brilliance from previous experience at Scotland Yard and welcomes him as part of the NYPD team.”

The show airs in the US at the end of September. It's also been picked up by Sky Living HD where it will be aired from October. The first season runs to 22 episodes
