The Guard, which is probably going to be the most successful Irish film in the last couple of years, has been released in France under the title “L’irlandais”.
It makes sense, as The Guard wouldn’t mean a lot to French audiences.

Since the latest (and last) Harry Potter movie is still showing in cinemas it might be almost premature to be thinking about boxsets .. However it’s 2011, so we can pre-order DVDs and BluRay as soon as we get out of the cinema..

The boxset contains 11 bluray discs in total, which is made up of the 8 films of the series plus 3 discs of “extras”. If you haven’t switched to bluray yet you can get a DVD version as well

In common with many world powers, France held colonies in Africa, with it controlling Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia amongst others.
Rachid Bouchareb´s moving film explores the involvement of Algerian and other North African troops fighting for France during the second world war.
From their recruitment through their fighting in a variety of campaigns in Italy and France the film follows a group of soldiers as they confront not only German troops but also treatment at the hands of their own officers.
As war films go it´s probably one of the most interesting ones that I’ve seen in a long time, as it explores an area that had been untouched by filmmakers previously.
It would be interesting to see something similar with say the Irish involvement in WW2.
Great film anyway and highly recommended.
