New Luc Besson Film – Trailer Out Now

Comments Off 22 March 2010

Luc Besson’s latest film is an adaptation of a comic book – Les Aventures d’Adele Blanc Sec.

The comics first appeared in the early 1970s in France and follow the adventures of Adele

The film is, unsurprisingly, produced by Europacorp with a soundtrack by Eric Serra.

Here’s the trailer (with subtitles)

The film is due to be released in France in April 2010

Luc Besson Bluray Bonanza

Léon (film)

This week sees the release of several Luc Besson titles on Bluray for the first time. Le Grand Bleu, Nikita, Atlantis, Leon – they’re all getting the bluray treatment.

Le Grand Bleu was previously released in the French market in French language only, which was quite annoying, so hopefully this UK release will have a proper audio track. Unfortunately the release details are a bit scant and any reviews I’ve seen so far are about the French language release.

Nikita, which was remade in English and also spawned a tv show, is a great film from the height of Besson’s career.

Atlantis, which is bundled with the French release of Le Grand Bleu, is being released as a separate disc. It’s a beautiful film, though more suited to providing background visuals than actually being watched from start to end.

Leon – another classic, with yet another Eric Serra soundtrack, stars Jean Reno (who crops up in a lot of Besson’s films). It also features an early role for Natalie Portman.

Personally I intend to grab copies of a few of these titles, as Besson has always been one of my favourites. I’ll report back on the audio!

Alatriste – Great Actors Fail To Save Historical Romp

Comments Off 02 July 2008

Viggo Mortensen and Eduardo Noriega are both fine actors.
I’d go so far as to say they are both excellent actors.
Unfortunately even good actors cannot save some films.
Such is the case with Alatriste, which is a very large Franco-Spanish-American co-production.
Based on the novels of Arturo Perez Reverte, it follows the life and adventures of a soldier, Alatriste (Mortensen).
Unfortunately while the cinematography and attention to detail maybe wonderful the actual story itself is boring. Nothing really happens, or at least that is the distinct impression you are left with.
It’s a pity, as maybe with a bit of more careful editing it could have been made that bit more interesting, but by the time the final titles roll you end up wondering what exactly was the film’s point.

Tell No One – Ne Le Dis A Personne

Alfred Hitchcock was the master of suspense. Unfortunately since his passing so few films come even close to providing the level of tension and intrigue that was his calling card.
Ne Le Dis A Personne (Tell No One) is probably the closest thing to a true thriller you are likely to see this year.
Alexandre Beck (François Cluzet) is happily married to his childhood sweetheart Margot (Marie-Josée Croze). Their idyllic marriage comes to a ghastly end when she is murdered and he is the prime suspect.
Eight years later Alexandre is still mourning the loss of his beloved Margot when the discovery of two bodies near the scene of the crime lead to the police re-opening the case. The plot thickens when Alexandre starts receiving mysterious emails from his supposedly long dead wife.
Is it a hoax? Is she alive?
Without giving away any of the plot it’s safe to say that the director keeps you on the edge of your seat for the entire film. It’s one of those refreshingly complex films that keeps you guessing right until the final credits.
If there is one French film that you are going to see in 2008 then let it be Tell No One. It is truly a masterpiece.
