Irish Box Office Figures Down Due To On Demand?

According to a report in today’s Independent Irish cinema box office figures are down considerably.

The report blames a number of factors, such as “3D fatigue” and a lack of “discretionary spending”. While both of those factors probably do have a role to play you’d have to wonder if they are the only ones.

A more comprehensive report covering things like “on demand” services such as iTunes, Zune etc., might give a more balanced view.

In recent months it has become increasingly common for film studios on both side of the Atlantic to give some films an “on demand” release at the same time or slightly before its big screen one.

Films such as “Knuckles” would probably never have got a widespread distribution deal, but For Lovers Only, starring Castle’s Stana Katic, could have done. At present it’s available via iTunes but not on the big screen, nor are there any official release dates on its IMDB page

Danny Trejo in Columbia Pictures' "Machete."

Machete, a Robert Rodriguez film, has a pretty amazing list of stars and looks like it could either be incredibly good fun, or horrible. I can’t see it falling anywhere in the middle.

It’s currently out on DVD, bluray and iTunes.

SWAT Firefight

Robert Patrick & Kristanna Loken in SWAT Firefight

Robert Patrick & Kristanna Loken in SWAT Firefight

SWAT Firefight went straight to DVD. Or maybe, as it’s 2011, I should say “straight to iTunes”.

It hasn’t got a whole lot to do with the original 2003 film, apart from the title. While the original film had the same characters as the TV show, this time round they’re a whole new set of characters.

Hotshot SWAT officer Paul Cutler gets sent to Detroit to train and certify their SWAT team (or one of them – which is kind of odd).

Shortly after arriving the team get called to a hostage situation involving a rather psychotic stalker, Hatch (Robert Patrick) and his “girlfriend” Rose (Kristanna Loken)

The girl ends up killing herself and Hatch basically spends the rest of the film trying to kill Cutler and his team.

Did I forget to mention that Hatch is a highly trained government agent? Sorry. Hatch is a highly trained government agent who has serious mental issues and a nasty love affair with C4 (and other explosives)

The film is reasonably entertaining, but quite forgettable.

(As an aside. Some totally useless trivia. Both Robert Patrick and Kristanna Loken played Terminators, though not at the same time.)
