Despicable Me 2 is breaking box office records in Ireland.

Universal Pictures Ireland put out a release earlier today commenting on the film’s success in its opening weekend and the figures are impressive.

…with an opening weekend total of €1.5m, including previews, Despicable Me 2 is the year’s biggest opening to date, beating the previous title holder Iron Man (€1,382,200 incl previews).

The sequel opened a phenomenal 71% ahead the original Despicable Me, on 190 screens across Ireland (92 locations with 64 in ROI and 28 in NI) representing Universal Picture’s biggest ever release in terms of screen numbers.

Commenting on the successful opening weekend Dave Burke, General Manager of Universal Pictures International Ireland, “We are thrilled at the success of Despicable Me 2 at the Irish box office; the record-breaking result shows the huge appetite that Irish audiences have for Gru and his minions”.

So is the sequel as good as the original? Is it better?
