I hate overly hyped films. Not because of the films themselves, as, in many cases, they can be deserving of the hype. However it’s almost impossible to watch a hyped film without having certain expectations of it. It’s so much more pleasant to sit down and watch a film without having any expectations whatsoever.
When I picked up Next (2007) starring Nicolas Cage, Jessica Biel and Julianne Moore, I hadn’t heard anything about it. I hadn’t even seen a trailer.
Cage is one of those actors who I’ve always liked since I first saw him grace the screen at the Cork Film Festival for Wild At Heart. Since then he’s done some very good films and a couple of mediocre ones.
In Next Cage takes on the role of a Las Vegas magician with a gift. He can see the future. While he can’t see that far into the future the FBI are convinced that he can help them stop a calamity. That part of the plot is quite weak to be honest, as it becomes clear very quickly that his skills are quite limited (or are they?).
There are some fantastic set pieces in the film and plenty of action, romance, suspense and an interesting twist.
I’d rather not give away too much!
If you’re looking for a good night in then I’d recommend it. It’s not as deep as Lord of War and it may not be on the same level as Face Off, but if you’re a Cage fan and enjoy some good action you shouldn’t be disappointed.
I ma going to rent this one out if xtravision has it.
Haven’t seen it yet, but I enjoy watching movies with Cage. I think he’s a brilliant actor.

Sorry for not replying sooner 🙂
Cage is a fantastic actor and if you haven’t seen Next yet I’d suggest you get it quick!
I’m probably going to add it to my list of DVDs to buy
