Today’s Special

NEW YORK - NOVEMBER 23: TV personality Aasif M...

I hadn’t heard anything about “Today’s Special”, so I didn’t have any crazy expectations for it. Some critics might have picked holes in it, but I really enjoyed it.

The film centres around an Indian chef, Samir (Aasif Mandvi), who is working as a sous-chef in a restaurant. While he might be a good chef technically his boss feels that he lacks “flair”. So Samir quits intending on heading to France to improve his skills. Before he can leave his father, who runs a traditional Indian restaurant, falls ill and Samir ends up taking over the restaurant to help out the family.

As the story unfolds Samir meets a taxi driver , played by Naseeruddin Shah, with a colourful past who takes over cooking in the restaurant and exposes Samir to a completely different style of cooking.

The film is a mixture of comedy and “feel good” drama and is best described as “good fun”.

Well worth grabbing on iTunes (or Netflix – if they have it)

Ricky Gervais Opening Golden Globes 2012

Ricky Gervais’ antics at last year’s Golden Globe ceremony obviously didn’t get him into as much trouble as people might have thought. Or if they did the organisers must have turned a blind eye to them, as they invited him back again this year to act as the event’s host.

The awards ceremony took place last night and here’s his opening monologue where he takes potshots at just about everyone, though it’s bit tamer than last year :)

AUDREY TAUTOU as Amelie in Amelie re-released in the UK on 14th October 2011

Amelie is being re-released in UK cinemas on October 14th.

I’m not sure if it will get into Irish cinemas, but if it does then go and see it. It’s probably one of the most refreshing films you’ll ever see!

Eddie Murphy To Host Oscars 2012

Eddie Murphy will be hosting the 84th Academy Awards (the Oscars) on Sunday February 26th 2012.

The comedian was nominated for an Oscar back in 2006 for his role in Dreamgirls.

Murphy’s career spans 30 years, with him starting out as a stand-up comedian at the tender age of 15. By the age of 19 he was in the cast of “Saturday Night Live”. His big screen debut came in 1982 in the comedy “48 Hrs”, though he’s probably best known for films such as “Beverly Hills Cop” or, more recently, as the voice of “donkey” in the “Shrek” series of films.

Speaking of the announcement Murphy referenced previous hosts:

“I am enormously honored to join the great list of past Academy Award hosts from Hope and Carson to Crystal, Martin and Goldberg, among others,” said Murphy. “I’m looking forward to working with Brett and Don on creating a show that is enjoyable for both the fans at home and for the audience at the Kodak Theatre as we all come together to celebrate and recognize the great film contributions and collaborations from the past year.”

The event will be televised globally, though with the time difference between Ireland and LA only dedicated film fans and insomniacs will be able to enjoy the entire event live.
