Mamma Mia is one of those rare films that is truly a breath of fresh air.
From the opening credits right through to the finale it is truly entertaining, but not just at a merely superficial level. It’s fun. It will make you laugh and it may almost make you cry in parts.
The cast list is impressive.
Meryl Streep (Donna) shines throughout, while relative newcomer Amanda Seyfried (Sophie) does an admirable job as her soon to be wed daughter.
The film’s plot is quite simple, yet very engaging.
Donna’s daugher Sophie is about to be married, but she doesn’t know who her father is. After reading one of her mother’s diaries she realises there are three potential candidates and so she invites all three to the wedding. The three “dads”, played by Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan and Stellan Skarsgård, have no idea why they’ve been invited and of course Donna isn’t told either.
Whether Sophie finds out who her father is or not the film is great fun with a great soundtrack of Abba hits.
Unfortunately the film’s producers didn’t do a lot with the soundtrack, which is a pity. Other recent musicals, such as Across the Universe went to great lengths to rework the hits, whereas Mamma Mia relies almost entirely on the original cuts.
