Amelie is being re-released in UK cinemas on October 14th.

I’m not sure if it will get into Irish cinemas, but if it does then go and see it. It’s probably one of the most refreshing films you’ll ever see!

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past

Jennifer Garner and Matthew McConaughey deskto...

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past is obviously inspired at some level by Dickens’ Christmas Carol. I say “at some level”, as the parallels are very slight.

The main character of Ghosts is womaniser Connor Mead (Matthew McConaughey) who seems to have an incredible knack for charming and bedding just about any woman he meets. He’s slick, he’s successful and he has plenty of charm.

However, when Mead goes to his younger brother’s wedding things begin to fall apart as he his forced to face the ghosts of his past relationships.

Wimbledon

Richard Loncraine’s Wimbledon starring Kirsten Dunst and Paul Bettany isn’t a “big” film. It’s not one of those massive “blockbuster” Hollywood productions featuring huge sets and dazzling special effects. Far from it.
What it does have, however, is a good cast and a semi-decent storyline. (James MacAvoy plays a supporting role as well)
Bettany’s character has been playing tennis for years, but has never quite “made it”. He’s feeling his age and has decided to giveup his pro career in favour of a regular wage. Dunst on the other hand is young, energetic and driven. She’s willing to do almost anything to win.
The two meet and their romance, set against the backdrop of the Wimbledon championship makes for some great cinema.
From a purely cinematic point of view the film is probably most memorable for its very clever opening sequence, where the titles appear on the left and right of the screen similar to a tennis ball (worth seeing, as my explanation is terrible!). Even if you’re not a fan of tennis some of the shots of the games are bound to impress.
One to watch if you feel like cheering yourself up.

Bedtime Stories

Comments Off 28 December 2008

Christmas always sees the release of a few “family” films. A lot of them are mediocre at best, but there is always the odd gem that compensates for a lot of the junk that Hollywood likes to inflict on us.
Bedtime Stories is one of those gems.
While it’s a bit of a departure from Adam Sandlers’ previous vehicle, You Don’t Mess With The Zohan, Sandler shows that he can still amuse while remaining “family friendly” (it’s a Disney production!).
Sandler plays Skeeter, a hotel handyman who ends up babysitting his sister’s kids for a few days while she goes for a job interview. To keep the kids amused he starts telling them imaginative bedtime stories. When the stories start coming true the results are hilarious.
The film is good fun and is one to watch out for on dvd ie. I’d quite happily watch it again.

Twilight – Bringing The Novel To The Silver Screen

1 Comment 27 December 2008

Twilight is probably going to be one of those films that will end up getting hyped to death. It’s proving to be incredibly popular with teenage girls, so I may not be in the correct demographic. Having said that, I have to admit that I really enjoyed the book on which the film is based.
Based on the first novel in Stephenie Meyer‘s series, Twilight could have been quite an awkward book to port to the big screen.
Fortunately for us the film does deliver.
The basic plot is that a teenage girl (Bella Swan, played by Kristen Stewart) gets sent to live with her father in a small town. There she spots Edward Cullen (Robert Pattison) who immediately fascinates her. Of course she doesn’t realise at first that he’s not all that he appears – he’s actually a vampire!
Most of the vampires in Meyer’s series aren’t all fangs and blood – they’ve decided to avoid taking human life, but not all vampires share this view…
The visual effects are pretty slick – be that the choice of lighting and makeup that gives the Cullens a sort of otherworldly feel or the action sequences where vampires move at impossible speeds.
The film’s soundtrack is also excellent – I picked up a copy a couple of weeks ago and have been listening to it quite a bit ever since.
So if you are a fan of Twilight (the book) then I’m sure you won’t be disappointed by the film. According to some of the fan sites they’ll be filming books two and three back to back, so we shouldn’t have too long to wait for the sequels, though I hope they are able to maintain the pace and quality.
If you haven’t read any of the books, then go see the film – it’s enjoyable!

What Happens In Vegas

What Happens in Vegas

Image via Wikipedia

Overhyped films often disappoint, but the opposite can be said for films like What Happens In Vegas.
I picked up What Happens In Vegas purely by chance (it was part of a special offer!)
When I sat down to watch it I wasn’t expecting much from it. Ashton Kutcher can be amusing, but he’s not exactly a “heavyweight”. Cameron Diaz may be great fun to watch, but she’s nearly always in “light” films.
What Happens in Vegas was, therefore, a pleasant surprise.
While I was expecting a bit of escapism, I wasn’t prepared to enjoy it as much as I did.
The storyline is quite simple.
Kutcher and Diaz meet in Las Vegas while escaping from the problems in their lives back in New York. After a very wild and debauched night they wake up to discover that they’ve got married. As it’s the US they expect that they’ll be able to get a quick divorce and get on with their lives, but the judge sentences them to 6 months “hard marriage”.
To make things that bit more interesting Kutcher won 3 million dollars, which is also being disputed, as the quarter he used was Diaz’s
The rest of the film is follows the crazy adventures of their 6 month marriage together and how they develop as people.
It’s not nearly as funny as There’s Something About Mary, but What Happens In Vegas is a lot funnier and entertaining than you’d expect.
If you want to cheer yourself up on a cold wintery night, then grab it from your local video shop.
