It looks like they’ve found yet another way to milk some more profits out of the Star Wars franchise.

We’ve had multiple cuts of the original films, a series of prequels that explained the origins of the myth to a new generation of viewers.

We’ve had bluray.. now we have 3D cinema re-releases.

The first one is out in February 2012

Cowboys And Aliens Great Visual Effects Pity About the Story

Cowboys and Aliens

Cowboys and Aliens

Cowboys and Aliens went on general release in the UK and Ireland this week. I went to see it yesterday evening and to be honest I was quite disappointed.

The storyline could be quite interesting, but it just failed to deliver for me.

Daniel Craig plays Jake Lonergan, who wakes up in the middle of the desert with a strange device attached to his arm. Within the first few minutes of the film he establishes himself as being a “hard ass” and manages to better a group of heavily armed cowboys.

He’s been wounded, though he can’t remember how, so he makes his way into the nearest town where he’s patched up by the local preacher before being arrested as there’s a warrant (and sizeable reward) out for his arrest.

Before that happens we get to see Olivia Wilde, as Ella Swenson, who is wandering around the place with a sixgun in her belt (women carrying guns in 19th century Arizona??)

Harrison Ford plays Woodrow Dolarhyde,  a local rancher who seems to have to be inherently evil and thinks he can do whatever he likes, as his cattle is keeping the town alive.

Enter the aliens who snatch Dolarhyde’s son as well as a number of the townspeople.

The rest of the film involves Dolaryhyde working with Lonergan and Ella Swenson as well as the local Indian tribe to find the aliens, free their captives and save the day.

If you ignore the rather weak storyline and unexceptional script you can probably enjoy the action sequences and the visual effects.

But even the visual effects really don’t save the film. It’s simply not that good. Sure, Craig’s portrayal of Londergan is endearing and Ford’s Dolarhyde is interesting, but their performances are, unfortunately, outweighed by the film’s flaws.

Is Michael Bay Afraid To Get Rosie Huntington-Whiteley Dirty?

I’ll do a proper review of the new Transformers at some point over the next couple of days…

One thing, however, that struck me as really bizarre about the film was Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s white top.

No – I haven’t developed a sudden fascination with women’s fashion items or anything like that ..

Throughout the last part of the film Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is wearing a very white top. That wouldn’t really matter if not for one odd detail.

Even though she’s involved in a huge action sequence that involves diving into upturned cars, jumping out of buildings, being in the middle of buildings as they explode around her or collapse over her.. the white top remains pristine.

Suspension of disbelief is one thing, but are we meant to honestly believe that she’s able to stay that clean amidst all the chaos?

Or is it simply that director Michael Bay didn’t want to get the former underwear model dirty? Or have her shown on screen with a little bit of dirt?

Planet of the Apes

With the Planet of the Apes franchise due to get a “reboot” later this year with the release of Rise of Planet of the Apes I thought it would be interesting to look at the trailer of both the 1968 version and the 2001 version.

The 1968 version starred Charlton Heston and went on to win an award from the Academy, though only got nominations for actual Oscars.

The 2001 version was directed by Tim Burton and starred Mark Wahlberg, Tim Roth, Helena Bonham Carter and Kris Kristofferson. It won several awards for makeup and special effects

So will the 2011 “reboot” spawn a full series of films, or will it just be a “one off” like the Tim Burton one?

Star Wars trilogy bluray

Star Wars – the original trilogy, is coming to bluray this September!

I suspect this will be a big seller.

I’ll be pre-ordering my copy later this week – just need to see if there are any special boxsets or other versions available.
