Tom Cruise Celebrates 25 Years of Cinema

Comments Off 31 May 2008

If you head over to the official Tom Cruise website there’s an interesting video. It covers Cruise’s career to date.
Love him or hate him, he has been in quite a few memorable films!
The only thing I don’t really understand is why he or his team are paying to advertise the video. Unless they are hoping to garner more interest in his upcoming film “Valkryie”, which some critics are already predicting to fail.

National Treasure – Glorious Disney Magic

Comments Off 29 May 2008

national treasure blu ray
I’ve always been a sucker for Disney films. Sure, they did go through a rough patch a few years ago, but there is still a lot of magic coming out of there.
National Treasure was initially released back in 2004, so it’s not exactly a “new” film. That the film giant is releasing it and other films from its back catalogue on glorious HD blu ray is hardly surprising. What is a pleasant surprise, however, is the amount of effort that they’ve put in.
While many studios are incredibly lazy with their “older” films, Disney have really pulled out the stops on this blu ray release.
The disc takes advantage of the extra capacity to offer a glorious 1080p presentation of the feature film with a choice of audio tracks, including uncompressed audio (which I usually opt for).
Not only that, but the host of extra features is truly impressive. The main part of the extras is a blu ray only “preservation room” where you can explore the Declaration of Independence in depth. Unlike some of the lazier producers Disney have provided a very rich multimedia experience that makes exploring the extra features actually enjoyable again.
I’m looking forward to seeing what they’ve done with the sequel! (It’s lined up for my viewing pleasure tonight)
Both National Treasure and National Treasure 2 are being released on blu ray in Europe at the beginning of next month, although I’m taking advantage of the slightly earlier US release dates (plus my blu ray player is a US model…)

Alien Vs Predator Requiem – Why Some Franchises Should Just Die

Comments Off 26 May 2008

alien vs predator requiem
Hollywood is commercial. It’s not about art. Some people may be naive enough to think that Hollywood is about art, but they’d be wrong. Is this cynical? Possibly a bit, but after sitting through Alien Vs Predator Requiem you will have to forgive me.
Some movie franchises are fantastic, but let’s be honest, they’re outnumbered significantly by mediocre series of sequels.
The Alien franchise was fantastic. Ok, the last film wasn’t the best, but overall you can’t really complain.
Predator only had two films, but they were both pretty good and had their strong points.

Alien vs. Predator
had a lot of potential. The story’s premise was quite good and with a bit of development you felt that it could have been a great film. It wasn’t. It was almost as if the director was a shy teenage girl who was afraid to show you the “goodies”. (Sorry about the horrendous image!)
So what could Alien Vs Predator Requiem do that would save the franchise?
If you’re looking for the answer you will be disappointed.
The film is vaguely entertaining, but it is totally forgettable.
The storyline picks up where Alien Vs Predator leaves off. One of the predator ships crashs to earth and releases several aliens.
You know the drill. Aliens start taking humans. Queue lots of blood and “he’s behind you” type scenarios, but they’re lacklustre.
The lighting is terrible, so it’s hard to make out if you’re looking at an alien or a predator hunting an alien. It’s kind of hard to shout for the “good guy” if you can’t even work out which one he is!
The humans are vaguely endearing, but again – totally forgettable.
What’s probably the most disturbing aspect of the film, apart from the rental fee, is that they’ve left the ending open for yet another sequel. Maybe someone should start a petition – let it die! Please! No more!
There are so many films that could be made, but instead Hollywood seems intent on sucking what little lifeblood is left out of some of its weakest products.

Hancock – A New Take On The Superhero?

Comments Off 23 May 2008

will smith in the role of Hancock
Will Smith. You can love him. You can hate him.
In either case you have to admit that he’s come a very long way from his days as the Fresh Prince of Bel Air.
His latest outing looks like it could be good fun. Of course it could be absolutely terrible, as I’ve only got the trailer to go by!
Imagine a super hero who people don’t look up to. Imagine a super hero who is actually quite repulsive to the public. That seems to sumup Hancock.

There are heroes… there are superheroes… and then there’s Hancock. With great power comes great responsibility – everyone knows that – everyone, that is, but Hancock. Edgy, conflicted, sarcastic, and misunderstood, Hancock’s (Will Smith) well-intentioned heroics might get the job done and save countless lives, but always seem to leave jaw-dropping damage in their wake. The public has finally had enough – as grateful as they are to have their local hero, the good citizens of Los Angeles are wondering what they ever did to deserve this guy. Hancock isn’t the kind of man who cares what other people think – until the day that he saves the life of PR executive Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman), and the sardonic superhero begins to realize that he may have a vulnerable side after all. Facing that will be Hancock’s greatest challenge yet – and a task that may prove impossible as Ray’s wife, Mary (Charlize Theron), insists that he’s a lost cause.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers – The Children Of Huang Shi

Comments Off 22 May 2008

rhys-meyers-childrenofhuangshi.jpg
Irish actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers seems to be cropping up all over the place.
The 30 year old Dublin native seems to have a very packed schedule.
Following on from the success of August Rush and The Tudors, his latest film is being released in the US tomorrow in selected cinemas. The film will play in New York and Los Angeles. The choice of Los Angeles could herald another Oscar attempt on the part of the film’s studio, Sony Pictures, who are based there.
The film’s synopsis sounds quite interesting, though we may have to wait some time before we actually get to see it on the silver screen in Ireland (it’s currently not on the IFTN’s calendar):

Based on real events, The Children of Huang Shi is a sweeping but intimate story set against war-torn China in the 1930’s. The film centers on a young English journalist (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), an American nurse (Radha Mitchell) and the leader of a Chinese partisan group (Chow Yun Fat) who meet in desperate and unexpected circumstances. Together they rescue 60 orphaned children, leading them on an extraordinary journey across hundreds of miles of treacherous terrain, through snow-covered mountains and an unforgiving desert. Along the way they discover the true meaning of love, responsibility and courage
