I’m often asked by people whether blu ray is really worth it. If a blu ray disc is that much better than a standard DVD.
Releases like Speed Racer answer the question all too clearly.
The blu ray will be released in the UK and Europe on November 10th, but I got my hands on a US import last week.
I wasn’t familiar with the anime that inspired the film, so my expectations were based purely on trailers and the fact that it was directed by the Wachowski pair (The Matrix).
While the storyline may not be the strongest it really doesn’t matter.
The film is a visual feast.
Speed Racer’s palette is incredibly rich and filled with wonderfully bright and crisp colours. To really get the benefit of the filmmakers’ vision you need to see this on as high a definition as possible and I honestly don’t think a DVD would hack it. I’ve done comparisons in the past and the richness of blu ray (or the now defunct HD DVD) leaves any DVD in the dust.
Emile Hirsch (The Girl Next Door) is joined by Cristina Ricci (Sleepy Hollow), Susan Sarandon and John Goodman in what has to be described as a racing speed fest.
Hirsch’s character, Speed Racer, is racing car mad. His elder brother died in a race, but this doesn’t quell Speed Racer who is only happy when he’s behind the wheel of his car.
Of course the cars aren’t like anything you’ve ever seen before and neither are the tracks themselves, with them looking more like some kind of crazy ride from an entertainment park. Queue lots of racing and dare devil stunts – all CGI based naturally, with simply amazing colour. (Colour is a dominant theme!)
