Irish Director Jim Sheridan’s Dream House

Irish director Jim Sheridan is probably best known for films like My Left Foot or In The Name of the Father.

His most recent film, which got a very negative review in this weekend’s Sunday Business Post is much more commercial and stars Daniel Craig and Rachel Wiesz.

Dream House is a horror – but with this film it’s pretty clear that the horror refers not only to the film’s genre but the film itself.  According to the LA Times, Sheridan was so unhappy with the cut that the studio released that he wanted his name removed from it!

Even the trailer (below) was met with negative reception, as it gives away more of the film’s plot and twists than many would be comfortable with

Jennifer’s Body – Not Worth A Trip To The Cinema

Comments Off 09 November 2009

Jennifer’s Body stars Megan Fox (Transformers), who reprises her “hot babe” style role and Amanda Seyfried (Mamma Mia) who is trying to play a convincing “ugly duckling”.

Basic plotline – Jennifer thrives on the flesh of boys. If she doesn’t get flesh / blood often enough she begins to lose her looks – getting paler and more “washed out” over time. The fresh blood keeps her looking young and attractive

I could go into more detail about the dynamic between the two leading female actors. (The lesbian undertones are quite interesting… )
I could try to justify the script’s weaknesses
I could even try to convince you that it was worth going to see, but who am I kidding?

Jennifer’s Body will be available on DVD, BluRay and cable TV. Wait until it is.

Quarantine Hits Cinemas November 14

Comments Off 28 October 2008

quarantine
I will be the first to admit that I’m not a fan of horrors. Gothic horrors maybe, but general horrors just don’t do it for me – sorry.
However I also know that I’m in a minority (or at least it feels that way!)
Judging by what I’ve been able to read about it Quarantine sounds like it’s filmed in a similar style to Cloverfield (or I could be picking this up backwards!)
So what’s the plot?

Television reporter Angela Vidal (Jennifer Carpenter) and her cameraman (Steve Harris) are assigned to spend the night shift with a Los Angeles Fire Station. After a routine 911 call takes them to a small apartment building, they find police officers already on the scene in response to blood curdling screams coming from one of the apartment units.
They soon learn that a woman living in the building has been infected by something unknown. After a few of the residents are viciously attacked, they try to escape with the news crew in tow, only to find that the CDC has quarantined the building. Phones, internet, televisions and cell phone access have been cut-off, and officials are not relaying information to those locked inside. When the quarantine is finally lifted, the only evidence of what took place is the news crew’s videotape

So you can see where I’m getting that Cloverfield vibe from?
Here’s the “red band” version of the trailer:

Cloverfield Hype Continues With DVD Release

Comments Off 06 April 2008

There was a lot of hype surrounding the cinema release of Cloverfield earlier this year, so the DVD release was bound to be as overhyped. Not that hype is necessarily a bad thing.
The Cloverfield DVD will be released in the US on April 22nd and in the run up to the “event” there is a pretty nice competition running which is based tightly around the film’s theme.
You can put together your own Cloverfield style film with monster effects etc., and get in on a chance to win lots of prizes. Unfortunately the competition is open to US residents only.

Cloverfield – Chinese Theater Hollywood

2 Comments 26 January 2008

I mentioned that I’d seen Cloverfield in the Chinese Theater in Hollywood last week, but I hadn’t uploaded the photo of the statue of liberty that is currently outside the cinema.
So here it is:
statue of liberty without head for Cloverfield release
It looks pretty impressive, doesn’t it?
